Providing Support
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 34 million Americans, or roughly 10.5% of the population, have diabetes, with around 90-95% of these cases classified as type 2 diabetes. The prevalence of this chronic disease continues to rise, driven by factors such as obesity, physical inactivity, and an aging population. Diabetes can lead to serious health complications, including heart disease, kidney failure, and lower limb amputation, making it a significant public health concern. Moreover, the economic burden of diabetes is staggering, as it costs the U.S. healthcare system over $327 billion each year in medical expenses and loss of productivity.
Lions Clubs International has been actively involved in addressing the diabetes epidemic through various initiatives aimed at education, prevention, and support. The organization emphasizes awareness campaigns that inform communities about diabetes risk factors and management strategies, while also advocating for healthier lifestyles. Local Lions clubs often collaborate with healthcare professionals to offer free screenings and health fairs, aiming to catch the disease early and mitigate its impact. By empowering individuals with knowledge and resources, Lions Clubs play a crucial role in combating this growing epidemic and supporting affected communities across the nation.
